Interview with Janey Merry

What inspired you to write Ready, Set, Sloth?

As a member of the Yukon Writers' Society, I had to submit a story for critique. Because I love sloths so much, I knew I wanted to use one as the main character in the story. As far as the moral of the story—that it's okay to take your time rather than rush—that was a reflection of my own life.

Is this your first book?

Officially, yes, this will be my first book once it's traditionally published. However, my first short story to ever be self-published was In Stitches, a suspenseful tale for an anthology, Shivers in the Night.

Besides a sloth, what are your top three favorite animals and why?

1. Cats, because I was raised with them.

2. Turtles, because they're the underdog pet. (And I have a turtle named Godzilla.)

3. Horses, because all little girls want horses/ponies/unicorns.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators

Janey regularly gathers with the local SCBWI chapter which meets in Full Circle Bookstore in OKC. The monthly meetings cover a wide-range of topics for both pre-published and published authors. Just this year, the group has learned about the importance of diversity represented in your book, how to write realistic fight scenes, manuevering Twitter during #PitchWars, taking time to have fun on “sketch-crawls”, practicing your pitch until you’re comfortable, etc. Guests speakers have included a martial artist and self-defense instructor and many, many accomplished authors.
